Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi (translation: A Match Made in Heaven) is a 2008 Indian romantic comedy directed by Aditya Chopra and produced by Yash Raj Films. Shahrukh Khan stars in the film as mild-mannered office worker Surinder “Suri” Sahni whose love for beautiful, vivacious Tania “Taani Partner” Gupta (Anushka Sharma) transforms him into dancing sensation “Raj.” It was released worldwide on December 12, 2008.

Release

Box-office

On its opening day, the film earned 7.5 crore net all over India. The second day earnings were estimated at 10 crores. According to first week collection records, Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi broke opening weekend records for Yash Raj Films, collected 60 crore worldwide and surpassed Dhoom 2 in its first week gross.By its fourth week, the film had earned 81 crores in India alone and $2 million in both the United States and the United Kingdom. It is the second highest unadjusted Bollywood grosser after Ghajini.

Critical reception

Robert Abele of the Los Angeles Times calls the film an “agreeably amusing comedy/romance/musical” noting that, “the magnetic Khan is a skilled enough comic actor with his physical transformation — like a Peter Sellers-ish recessive turning into a Jerry Lewis extrovert — that believing Taani wouldn’t notice isn’t difficult”. Rachel Saltz of The New York Times described the film it as “‘soft, sweet and slow,’ in the words of one of its songs. It deftly blends comedy, the ruling tone of the new Bollywood, with melodrama, the ruling tone of the old.” Manish Gajjar of the BBC gave the film four out of five stars noting that, “Shah Rukh Khan makes you laugh and cry as the nerdy-looking, clumsy, bespectacled Surinder and the all hip and happening Raj. A true professional in his in his own right, Khan breezes through his dialogues full during the emotional and comic scenes.” Frank Lovece of Film Journal International argues that the film is “smarter and more self-aware of its rom-com contrivances than most Hollywood movies” and notes that while “movie’s cleverness eventually devolves into a simplistic Harlequin-Romance-for-males wish-fulfillment about beauty and the geek, it’s a very well-acted variation on a Hollywood staple.” Critic and author Maitland McDonagh of MissFlickChick.com stated that the film, “has been dismissed in some quarters as self-conscious and artificial, a coyly self-referential reworking of outdated movie tropes a la Todd Haynes’ Far From Heaven, but it works for me in a way that most contemporary Hollywood romcoms don’t.”

A number of critics have further noted the similarities between this movie and superhero films. Khalid Mohamed, of the Hindustan Times, gave the film three and half out of five stars stating that Suri, “is a soul brother to the mousy Clark-Kent-cum-Superman” who “makes you laugh and sob alternately.” Mayank Shekhar from Mumbai Mirror gave the film three out of five stars and argues that: “Same person, oppositely twinned, is usually the stuff of super-hero films; the kinds of Clark Kent-Superman, Peter Parker-Spiderman etc. You feel entirely lost in this fantasy flick, because for most part, it’s built around something so intimate and real. It’d be much easier to travel to foreign countries around far-fetched situations with fake heroes.” In addition, Sudish Kamath of The Hindu states that while Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi could have been an interesting art film exploring the dynamics of an arranged marriage, the director instead, “treats this character type like Sam Raimi would treat Spider-Man [...] Superhero ‘Raj’ slips into costume and out, complains how it gets uncomfortable around the crotch, to win over his Mary Jane with not much saving-the-world business to keep him busy. But while Spidey does it for a bigger reason than just MJ, Raj’s sole motivation is to stalk his wife and play out his fantasy as somebody else. His obsession with his alter-ego reaches new heights when he wants his wife to cheat on the real him — the goofy Surinder Saini who starts off well.”

Rajeev Masand of CNN-IBN is critical of the film, giving it two out of five stars and stating that, “Aditya Chopra’s return to direction after eight years is marked by a flawed script, which in turn spawns a disappointing film. Where’s the smart dialogue and the spirited characters that defined his debut film, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge? There’s no trace of either in this film [...] the problem then, at the root of Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi, is that much like those artificial sets in the film, the emotions too are contrived.” Nikhat Kazmi from The Times of India also notes that Surinder Sahni is, “a character you still haven’t seen in Shah Rukh’s arsenal before. And that’s why he strikes a chord. But that’s about all this much-awaited film can boast about. Quite a let-down, specially since it marked the return of director Aditya Chopra after a long hiatus from the hurly burly of movie-lore [...] It’s these two major absurdities — the moustache-as-disguise and the miraculous divine revelation at the end — that turn this film into a drama that’s completely out-of-sync with contemporary Bollywood.” Derek Elley of Variety argues that the film has “a huge, hollow center that sinks the project early on [...] Paper-thin script drags itself to the finish line amid tiresome mugging by Khan, a huge credibility gap (she never recognizes him without his glasses and mustache?) and a blah score with only one showstopper (featuring five famous actresses).”

Singh Is Kinng

Movies Online

Singh Is Kinng is a 2008 Bollywood film. The film is directed by Anees Bazmee and stars Akshay Kumar and Katrina Kaif. About 75% of the movie was shot in Australia, around the Gold Coast region and Brisbane using an Australian production team (Instinct India). The film was released on August 8, 2008.

The spelling of the word “king” in the film’s title with an additional letter “n” was based on advice provided by a numerologist, a practice which has become routine in Bollywood.

Reaction from the Sikh community

Before the movie was released, it was reported that the Sikh community in Khar, Mumbai was very pleased with the portrayal of the Sikhs in the film. Vipul Shah, the producer of the film, was felicitated at the Khar Gurdwara on June 18, 2008. He said, “Our intention was to portray the community in the right way and I am glad that we have managed to achieve it.”

However, some members of the Sikh community had expressed their displeasure over the portrayal of Sikhs in the movie. The Shiromani Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee (SGPC) announced that it was up to the audience to decide whether they want to watch the film or not.

On August 1, 2008, the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) sought a ban on the movie, saying that it ‘ridiculed’ the Sikh community. It wrote a letter to Sheila Dikshit, the chief minister of Delhi, asking her to ban the movie. The main objection raised was that the film promos showed Akshay Kumar’s character sporting a trimmed beard, which some orthodox Sikhs found offensive. Akshay Kumar and Vipul Shah had a 50-minute discussion with the DSGMC authorities, in which they explained the positive message behind the film. The DSGMC members requested twelve changes, which the filmmakers complied with. Akshay Kumar also said that the film was aimed at portraying “how strong and brave Sikh community is.” As a result of the discussion, DSGMC gave a clean chit to the movie on August 7, 2008.

However, on the same day (August 7), the Sikh organization Damdami Taksal asked all sikhs to protest against the movie. The first showing of the movie in NM Cinema Hall of Amritsar on August 8, 2008 was disrupted by some Sikh protesters, who vandalized the hall and damaged property.

Review

The movie has been well received until now with most theatres outside India reporting 95%-100% attendance. Reviews have been mixed. Taran Adarsh, of indiafm.com stated, “Singh is Kinng lives up to the hype and hoopla. Want a joyride without taxing your brains? Board the SINGH IS KINNG wagon. At the box-office, the film will fetch a hurricane-like start. The paid previews, the opening weekend, the first week business, everything will be record-shattering. Notwithstanding the new oppositions in the weeks to come, Singh is Kinng will rule the hearts of the aam junta [whose verdict matters the most] as also the box-office, proving a record holder in the final tally.” NDTV India gave the movie 2.5/5 stars. Hindustan Times gave the film a 2/5 stars. The film turned out to be such a great success that it was showcased at the 2008 Toronto International Film Festival.

Hindustan Times, a leading Indian newspaper gave the movie 2 stars. Crucial detailing isn’t the virtue here.”

[3]AOL India (Noyon Jyoti Parasara) gave it four stars, saying ” Ashutosh Gowariker has proved that he is one of the best filmmakers we have today. While your heart goes for the love between the two protagonists, the film leaves you at such heights of emotions that you would literally be shaking with excitement! Tahaan

January 14th, 2009
Movies Online

Tahaan is an Indian drama film by Santosh Sivan. The film is based on the life of a young boy and his pet donkey. It is a fable-like journey of the eponymous eight-year-old boy, whose life revolves around the pursuit to find real purpose in his little world. The film stars Purav Bhandare as the young boy. Anupam Kher, Sarika, Rahul Bose, Rahul Khanna and Victor Banerjee form the rest of the cast.

Production

After major commercial releases such as The Terrorist (1999), Asoka (2001), Anandabhadram (2005) and Before the Rains (2007), award-winning director Santosh Sivan got the idea for this film after reading a newspaper report. He formed a fable-like story from the report.

Since Kashmir is a strife-torn area, films are rarely picturized there. However in the case of this film, Sivan thought that audiences can relate it to the film well. It was only after 18 years that a film was filmed in Kashmir.

While filming in Pahalgam, Sivan realised to his surprise that children were comfortable with guns. It seemed to him that it was a part of everyday life for them. The film makes eloquent use of Quranic verses or azaan, for which the director took help from research scholars in Kashmir.

When shooting there we only wanted to show the real life. I had heard some Quranic verses there at some Dargah. I thought I could use them to send a message of hope. I wanted to use the azaan for a nice purpose, a beautiful thing, not for any wrong deed… At the end I wanted to show the positive power of a dream.

Reception

The film opened to generally positive reviews. Ziya Us Salam of The Hindu hailed the film as a ‘visual poem’ and “Responsible cinema, brilliant cinema.” Raja Sen of Rediff gave it 4 out of 5 stars, calling it a “must-watch”. Rajiv Masand of CNN-IBN called it a “film of great virtue” and gave 3 out of 5 stars. Baradwaj Rangan called it as a “film of first-rate performances”.
