  • Oye Lucky! lucky Oye! garnered positive response from almost every critic. Rajeev Masand of IBN gave it 3 out of 5 and stated, “Watch it because it’s a film that respects your intelligence. And films like that are hard to find.”
  • Khalid Mohammad also gave it 3.5 and concluded that, “Granted Oye..oye has its downers but at least it has the guts to be zany-`n’-zappy.Way to balle balle, thumka maar ke.Manu Rishi, as the sidekick, is the surprise packet;he was also responsible for the dialogue that’s as delicious as chicken tikka. And you once again get lucky with Abhay Deol. This actor knows his acting mutton chops and does justice to a succulent role.”
  • Reviewer Noyon Jyoti Parasara too gave the film 3.5 out of 5 and expressed, “Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye! is one film which is going to leave you delighted. Although the ending is debatable.OLLO is well directed and Dibakar Banerjee can take a bow for that.Performance wise this is an Abhay Deol movie. But the highlight of the movie is definitely Paresh Rawal. Brilliant.Neetu Chandra has a smaller role but makes an impact.Manu Rishi is good as Abhay’s friend. Special mention is deserved by Manjot Singh, who plays the younger Lucky.Enjoy this one along with popcorns or coffee. The extra money spent will be justified!”

This is “the first time an international studio has bought the video rights of an Indian film.”

Taare Zameen Par is India’s official entry for the 81st Academy Awards Best Foreign Film category.

Production

Development

The husband and wife team of Amol Gupte and Deepa Bhatia initially conceived of the idea for Taare Zameen Par out of the desire to understand why some children cannot conform to an educational system. The screenplay began as a short story titled “High Jump” and developed into a full work seven years later. Deepa Bhatia later stated in an interview with The Hindu that her initial inspiration was not the subject of dyslexia. Instead, it was derived from the childhood of Japanese filmmaker Akira Kurosawa (who was a poor student in school), as she wanted to explore the story of “a child who did not fit into the school stream.” Bhatia referenced a specific moment when Kurosawa began to bloom only after meeting an art teacher who devoted time and attention to him. Bhatia further stated, “It was this scene that became the inspiration for how a teacher could transform the life of a student.”

In developing the character of a young boy based on Kurosawa, Bhatia and Gupte found themselves perplexed: “Amole kept posing issues like: what was wrong with the kid? Was he a slow learner? Was he disinterested, or incapable? All these questions kept coming up and we felt that there were not enough answers.” They became involved in intensive research which led them to groups such as the Maharashtra Dyslexia Association and PACE (Parents for a Better Curriculum for the Child). Eventually they decided to make dyslexia the central topic and theme of the film: “We thought this was the way to address Ishaan’s story, as a child who has learning disabilities and nobody understands what the problem is.” They began to spend time and work with dyslexic children in order to begin development of the screenplay, carefully protecting their identities in the final version of the screenplay. Gupte recalled that, “We began with a small workshop with eight or nine kids. A fun session, this became a space to observe their anxieties and the way their mind was working through art, paper and colours. And it was clear that their minds were thinking ‘out of the box’. This had to be respected, honoured and clapped for.”

Casting

Gupte and Bhatia turned to Shiamak Davar’s Summer Funk workshops in order to find an actor to play Ishaan. In choosing Darsheel Safary, Gupte had a number of boys audition for a scene in which they would informally describe how they would bunk school after being given a few scenerios. He recalls, “It was a tough call. But Darsheel has the mischief in his eyes to be Ishaan. Everyone just naturally gravitated towards him.”

Originally Aishwarya Rai and Katrina Kaif were the first female choices for this film but they turned down the offer due to the film’s irksome comedy style and were replaced by Vidya Balan and Amisha Patel.[2] Vidya Balan had to take Kathak lessons for this film. Though he claimed this film as a violation of copyright, the High Court of Kerala allowed the violation of copyright, in light of the production cost. Guru is a 2007 Hindi film directed by Mani Ratnam. It stars Abhishek Bachchan, Aishwarya Rai, R. Madhavan, Vidya Balan and Mithun Chakraborty in pivotal roles. The movie also has Mallika Sherawat in a guest appearance. The movie was also dubbed in Tamil and Telugu. The film was released on January 12, 2007, and premièred at the Elgin Theatre in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

Production

Guru was written and directed by Mani Ratnam, while Vijay Krishna Acharya wrote the Hindi dialogues. Shooting for the film took place in Mumbai, Turkey, Badami and Melkote (both in Karnataka), as well as in Chennai, Pollachi,Madurai,Chettinad region Tamil Nadu, and Athirapilly in Kerala. The music is composed by A. R. Rahman, with lyrics by Gulzar. Cinematography for the film is handled by Rajiv Menon.

Guru has been described by Ratnam and others involved in the production as a film that is reflective of a man’s desire for ambition and success, and how times have changed from the period immediately after the country’s independence to the present. Some reports have speculated that this film is a biopic of, one of India’s biggest Industrial tycoon, Dhirubhai Ambani. Like Guru, Ambani also had roots in Gujarat as the son of a schoolteacher, went abroad to work for the gas company Shell, and returned to India to import polyester. There are also differences between the two stories. Ratnam has described Guru as inspired by stories both past and present.

Historical Similarities

In the film Abhishek Bachchan portrays Gurukant Desai, who resembles Dhirubhai Ambani, the owner of Reliance India. Dhirubhai traveled to Yemen in his early years to work from junjoi ; In the film, Gurubhai travels to Turkey to escape his father’s criticism.

Historically, the media war waged against Dhirubhai Ambani was fought by Ramnath Goenka’s newspaper The Indian Express. In the film, the paper is named the Swatantra Samachar, and is headed by Manik Das Gupta (Mithun Chakraborty). The reporter portrayed by Madhavan’s Shyam Saxena resembles S. Gurumurthy.

Another image that resonates historically are the Contractors mentioned in the film, who closely resemble the Wadias. The younger Contractor shares similarities with Nusli Wadia.

Trivia

  • In Telugu, it was released as Gurukanth.
  • During a scene, Aishwarya Rai fell and had a few bruises on her hands and feet. Filming had to be suspended for a few hours while she received first aid.
  • S. Bharathi, a lawyer in real life, plays the role of a marriage registrar in the movie.
  • For the Tamil release of Guru, Tamil actor Surya Sivakumar lent his voice for Abhishek Bachchan’s character and veteran actor Nassar has voiced for Mithun Chakraborty’s character. Actress Rohini has voiced lines for Aishwarya Rai, while Madhavan has voiced his own lines.
  • Guru is India’s first film to have a mainstream international premiere in Canada. Director Mani Ratnam as well as two of the film’s Indian stars Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai were extended a personal invitation by the Toronto mayor David Miller.
  • Guru is the only movie to be shot at the premises of the famed ‘Express Estates’, the 21-acre (85,000 m2) stretch in the heart of Chennai City (opp. to Spencer plaza), the home of The New Indian Express and Dinamani, as the film demanded a period look for their settings of a media house, which the old office buildings provided. Incidentally the buildings were brought down to dust weeks after the filming was over in the premises, since the Media Group moved to a new location in Ambattur.
  • The Helicopter used during the scene where Gurukanth Desai goes to Delhi to meet minister, has cleverly been scripted by the film makers to look like Reliance Industries aircraft (RLC) but the Bell 206 L3 (H) helicopter is actually registered to Raymond Ltd. a Singhania family company, it was put into service on June 1990.
  • In the version that was played out in theatres across the world, Gurukant Desai (Abhishek Bachchan) and his wife Sujatha (Aishwarya Rai) are shown to have twin daughters. But in the original version, Aishwarya first gives birth to a stillborn child. The birth takes place after she leaves Guru in the city, to go after her brother.
  • In the film, Sujatha visits Manikdas Gupta at his house with her daughters. Her intention is to bring peace between her warring husband and the newspaper tycoon. What is left out of the movie is this scene where Guru is angry with his wife for going to his nemesis’s house.
  • Vidya Balan and R. Madhavan’s roles were also chopped off to bring the film within the set duration.

Lage Raho Munna Bhai

Lage Raho Munna Bhai (English: Carry on Munna Bhai) is a 2006 Indian musical comedy film directed by Rajkumar Hirani and produced by Vidhu Vinod Chopra. It is the second film in the popular Munna Bhai series of Bollywood. Sanjay Dutt stars in this film as Munna Bhai, a Mumbai (Bombay) underworld don, who begins to see the spirit of Mahatma Gandhi. Through his interactions with the image of Gandhi, Munna Bhai begins to practice what he calls Gandhigiri (Satyagraha, non-violence, and truth) to help ordinary people solve their problems. His sidekick, Circuit, is portrayed by Arshad Warsi.

Lage Raho Munna Bhai has had a strong cultural impact in India, popularising Gandhism under Munna Bhai’s notion of Gandhigiri. As noted by critics, the film has “stirred the popular imagination”, leading to a number of Gandhigiri protests in India and in the United States: “For generations born after Gandhi’s assassination, Munnabhai, the eponymous hero of the film, has rendered “Gandhism” passé and “Gandhian” arcane. The new buzzword is “Gandhigiri”, a value, and valuable, addition to the lexicon of a culture suffused with every abominable kind of “Dadagiri” and “Goondagiri”.

The film was generally well received by both the critics and mass audience. It was a box office success and was elevated to a blockbuster rating (grossing over 720 million Indian Rupees),. The film received a number of awards, including four National Film Awards of India. It is the first Hindi film to be shown in the United Nations. and won popular accolades at various International film festivals including Cannes Film Festival, 2007 edition . It was praised by the Prime Minister of India, Manmohan Singh, who stated (using Gandhi’s nickname, “Bapu” or father) that the film “captures Bapu’s message about the power of truth and humanism.”

Influences and allusions

Rather than follow the traditional sequel format, each film in the Munna Bhai series features Munna and Circuit in a story which is comprehensive unto itself and is not continued or referred to in another film in the series. Indeed, director Rajkumar Hirani has compared this format to the films of Charlie Chaplin and Laurel and Hardy, as well as to the James Bond series. Others have also likened the series to the work of Laurel and Hardy.[25] Some, however, have negated this comparison, stating that the series is more akin to the Road to… “buddy films” of Bob Hope and Bing Crosby.[26] Director Rajkumar Hirani admitted that his work was deeply inspired by the films of Hrishikesh Mukherjee.

Cinematic works by Vidhu Vinod Chopra (such as Parineeta) often contain allusions to other important films and works of music or literature. In Lage Raho Munna Bhai, Jahnavi’s opening line for her radio show, “Gooooooood Moooooooorninnnng Mumbai!”, resembles Robin Williams’ opening for his radio show (“Gooooooooood morning, Vietnaaaaaaaaammm!”) in the 1987 film Good Morning, Vietnam. Critics have also noted similarity with the 1977 film Oh, God!, in which God appears as a kindly old man to the protagonist.

In addition, parts of the melody of the song “Pal Pal…Har Pal” are reminiscent of the Cliff Richard song “Theme for a Dream”.

Cast

  • Sanjay Dutt as Murli Prasad Sharma, known affectionately as Munna Bhai
  • Arshad Warsi as Circuit, Munna’s loyal sidekick

The movie stars Rekha, Hrithik Roshan, Priyanka Chopra and Naseeruddin Shah. Preity Zinta makes a special appearance.

Reaction

Krrish was generally met with positive reaction in its homeland India but with a mixed reaction overseas. In India, Taran Adarsh of IndiaFM.com wrote that “Krrish is a terrifically exciting and compelling experience”, and even considered it superior to Superman, Batman and Spider-Man. B4U TV also gave a generally positive review, praising the second half of the film.

Overseas, Leo Goldsmith of notcoming.com criticized the special effects and for “wearing its corporate sponsorship on its sleeve” in “its dialogue” and “every other shot of the film.” Jaspreet Pandohar of BBC criticized the script for being “low on originality” but praised Hrithik Roshan’s performance and the action scenes choreographed by Tony Ching Siu-Tung. According to Richard James Havis of The Hollywood Reporter, “This Bollywood epic crunches together romance, comedy, extraterrestrials, martial arts, dancing and action to tell an entertaining story about a reluctant Indian superhero” but said it may be “far too crazed for foreign viewers.” David Chute of L.A. Weekly said it was a “hearty pulp cinema that really sticks to your ribs.” Ronnie Scheib of Variety said it was an “enjoyable, daffily improbable escapist romp.” Laura Kern of The New York Times said it was a blend of “carefree romance, show-stopping action and sci-fi.”

Box office

In India, Krrish is one of the highest-grossing movies of this decade and is the second worldwide highest-grossing movie of 2006 after Dhoom 2. Considering the overdone superhero genre in Hollywood, it still did good business Overseas.
